British Garden Centres and Too Good To Go Celebrate Saving Over 10,000 Meals from Going to Waste

British Garden Centres, the UK’s largest family-owned garden centre group, and the surplus food app pioneer, Too Good To Go, are delighted to mark a significant milestone in their partnership. Together, they have successfully rescued more than 10,000 meals from going to waste since introducing the initiative earlier this year.

In a world where 40% of all food ends up as waste, and the current cost-of-living crisis tightens purse strings, the Too Good To Go app provides a practical solution for British Garden Centres to extend support to their communities effectively.

The year 2023 marked the beginning of the collaboration with Too Good to Go, spanning across 26 carvery sites at Tarporley, Osterley, Chapel, Thatcham, Bressingham, Arcadia, Carr Gate, Roxton, Ramsgate, Hornsea, Horncastle, Wolseley Bridge, Shipley, East Durham, Tring, Woodthorpe, Albrighton, Irton, Leyland, Louth, Braintree, Bolton, Gilberdyke, Crawley, Brigg, and Mirfield. These centers have distributed Surprise Bags filled with food to local customers, collectively preventing over 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. To put this in perspective, it’s the same as powering more than 4 million smartphone charges or offsetting 114 flight tickets from London to Berlin.

Too Good To Go is a social impact company that collaborates with businesses to combat food waste by allowing customers to purchase surplus food from restaurants, convenience retailers, and producers at an affordable price. Users simply download the free Too Good To Go app, locate nearby establishments offering unsold food, and then purchase a Surprise Bag filled with high-quality food at a fraction of its original retail cost, all to be collected at an assigned time.

Ricky Towers, Group Restaurant Director at British Garden Centres, expressed his satisfaction, stating: “British Garden Centres and Too Good To Go have successfully reached the impressive milestone of 10,000 meals, showcasing their fruitful partnership. Our team takes great pride in the accomplishments and the food that we have saved from going to waste at our carvery sites in recent months. This significant achievement serves as a testament to our shared dedication towards combating food waste and its environmental implications. By demonstrating how small actions can yield significant transformations, we are looking forward to continuing our collaboration and achieving bigger milestones, all in the pursuit of a sustainable future”
