The STIGA team are proud to announce that they have donated a number of products to Growing Space through their We Care That You Care campaign!
Growing Space is a charity working with people with mental health issues, learning disabilities and people who are neuro-diverse. At Mardy Park Resource Centre, in Abergavenny, the team are engaged in gardening and tending the grounds of the centre. They are aged 19 to 90 and care for the gardens through maintaining borders, grass cutting, hedge cutting, fruit and vegetable production and propagation of the plants used in the gardens.
The grounds are enjoyed by the team, their families (on open days, they raise funds for Nursing charities under the National Garden Scheme) the residents of the 8-bed residential unit which is used for the rehabilitation of older people recovering from hospital stays and a palliative beds, social services staff based at the centre and members of the public who use the grounds. The team are very proud of all their hard work and dedication.
Jim Quinn of Growing Space, stated, “The generous gift from STIGA will enable more of the volunteers to engage in a wider variety of tasks. The lightweight battery-powered machinery will help democratise the tasks available to team members who had been previously denied the opportunity because of the weight of petrol tools or clunky design, for example, pull cords on petrol tools. The team were chuffed to be awarded the excellent STIGA tools and they are enjoyed daily by the team. The lightweight tools have also allowed older volunteers and women to get involved. The team pride themselves on their Green credentials, winning a Green Flag Award, and the tools are greatly appreciated.”
The project provides meaningful activity through horticultural engagement seeking to combat social isolation and loneliness and to improve the health and well-being of the volunteers. Growing Space provides accredited training in horticulture and helps those who wish it, find employment or further training.
