Redexim at Malton & Norton Golf Club

Redexim at Malton & Norton Golf Club has transformed its maintenance practices since the acquisition of the Redexim Top-Brush. Initially purchased to address challenging conditions described as a ‘worm cast factory,’ the 6m wide brush has proven to be a versatile and essential tool for the club’s maintenance team.

Head Greenkeeper Richard Jacques acknowledges the underestimation of the Top-Brush’s significance prior to its purchase, stating, “It was evident from the get-go that, used in the right conditions and at the right time, the Top-Brush could effectively remove worm casts better than any of the alternatives we’d tried, so we decided to purchase one through Ripon Ground Care in October 2022.”

Malton & Norton Golf Club, established in 1910, expanded to a 27-hole parkland play course, becoming popular among golfers in Yorkshire and beyond. Facing challenges with chemical restrictions, the club experimented with various brushes and mats to combat a worm problem until the Redexim Top-Brush proved to be the solution.

Richard emphasizes the unexpected uses the Top-Brush has brought to the maintenance calendar, noting its role in dispersing worm casts and standing the plant up on fairways twice a week between March and October. This routine has not only improved cut quality but has also enhanced overall turf density and quality.

With its 6m width, the Top-Brush stands out as a highly productive maintenance solution. Its versatility allows for adjustments in brush direction and working depth, making it suitable for light surface brushing, including clearing dew, incorporating topdressing material, or removing clippings. Alternatively, it can be used for a deeper, more aggressive surface agitation to eliminate organic matter from large areas effectively.

“Having used the Top-Brush for over a year, we’re now in a position of managing worm casts preventatively – by reducing OM and improving density – resulting in fewer instances, which is a big positive,” says Richard. “That’s on top of hugely elevating the turf quality and appearance, not just on fairways but also approaches and semi-rough which is giving us a better product in the summer and one that’s more resilient to host play going into the winter months.”

The Redexim Top-Brush has proven to be a game-changer in the maintenance practices of Malton & Norton Golf Club, showcasing its effectiveness in addressing multiple challenges and contributing to the overall improvement of turf quality.
