Kew Horticulturist Reveals Houseplant Care Tips for a Happy and Healthy Home

Kew Horticulturist Brie Langley is sharing expert houseplant care tips on nurturing your indoor green companions In anticipation of Houseplant Week 2024 (9-15 Jan 2024)

Recent studies have affirmed what many have instinctively known – the color green and images of lush plants can significantly uplift our mood. Moreover, creating an indoor jungle not only adds a touch of nature to our living spaces but can also contribute to reducing stress and blood pressure by lowering the production of stress hormones. It’s no wonder that houseplants are currently experiencing a surge in popularity.

Watering Wisdom:

  • Only water when the top 2 cm (1 in) of soil feels completely dry to the touch.
  • Ensure uniform soil moisture by watering thoroughly and allowing excess water to drain. Opt for pots with holes and place a saucer underneath or, if lacking holes, use a smaller plastic pot within the solid one. Remove any standing water in the saucer or outer pot after a day or two.
  • Monthly, provide diluted plant food during watering.
  • In hard water areas, use treated water for air plants and carnivorous plants to reduce chlorine and calcium content.

Strategic Positioning:

  • Place plants in easily accessible locations, especially if dealing with large pots.
  • Adhere to light requirements specified for each plant; inadequate light can cause plants to become elongated and weak.
  • Be mindful of placing plants near radiators, which can accelerate drying, and windows that might get cold during winter nights.

Pest Management:

  • Combat insects by gently wiping them off with a damp cloth.
  • Promptly remove moldy and dead leaves to prevent disease spread.
  • Utilize baby-safe cleaning products on plant tools.

Key Considerations:

  • Purchase nursery-grown plants from reputable suppliers to avoid contributing to the endangerment of wild plant populations.
  • Some plants may cause allergies or be poisonous; always inquire before purchasing.
