Embracing Wildlife-Friendly Gardening This Winter at Barnsdale Gardens

The Barnsdale Gardens team is thrilled to embrace the opportunity to entice a diverse array of wildlife to each of their 38 uniquely designed gardens in the East Midlands. With a focus on preserving the presence of birds and beneficial insects, Nick Hamilton and his colleagues are dedicated to maintaining Barnsdale Gardens as a haven for wildlife.

Recognizing the documented benefits of attracting insects, birds, and other wildlife to aid in pollination and enhance biodiversity, the team at Barnsdale Gardens emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between humans and the natural world. As these friendly visitors contribute to our ecosystem, it becomes imperative for us to reciprocate by fostering a welcoming environment for them.

Winter Planting Strategies for Birds

According to Nick Hamilton, owner of Barnsdale Gardens, the key is to extend the season of support for our feathered friends. Planting berry-producing varieties like Sorbus (mountain ash), Crataegus (hawthorn), Hedera (ivy), Prunus spinosa (sloe), and Cotoneaster ensures that birds are well-catered for during the colder months.

Insect-Friendly Plants for the Chilly Months

Insects that remain active during winter benefit from late-flowering and winter-flowering shrubs, such as Sarcococca and shrubby honeysuckle. Creating hibernation spots becomes crucial for keeping bugs and other wildlife cozy and well-nourished. At Barnsdale Gardens, this is achieved through the installation of bug houses containing short lengths of bamboo for solitary bees and ladybirds, rolled-up corrugated cardboard for lacewings, and mulch for a variety of insects.

Winter Preparations for a Biodiverse Spring

Encouraging wildlife into your garden during spring and summer necessitates providing for them in the winter as well. By following the aforementioned tips and ensuring consistent wildlife feeding, you can guarantee a vibrant and flourishing garden during the warmer months—a haven of beauty and pollination.
