How to over-winter your plants successfully?

Our prized plants and trees are particularly vulnerable in wintertime.  High winds, frost and snow can destroy years of growing in very little time, so taking some simple precautions now will reduce fatalities over the winter months.

Bio Green, which specialises in innovative products for those with smaller gardens, has some ingenious plant-protection products designed for the colder weather.

Ideal for small greenhouses or cold frames

Plants stored in greenhouses are still susceptible to cold weather; Bio Green’s Firefly is a little terracotta frost guard that is both highly functional and attractive. Specially developed candles can be placed inside the mushroom-shaped holder to provide enough heat to keep small greenhouses or cold frames frost-free without using an electricity or paraffin. Plus, the Firefly’s lid has two functions; it stores the heat from the candle or can be filled with scented oils, thanks to the glazed bowl.

When more heat is needed

For larger greenhouses, the Phoenix electric heater is quiet yet powerful, evenly distributing heat around structures to achieve temperatures ranging between 0 and 26 degrees C. Place at ground level, using the floor supports, or hang it from a ceiling using the chains provided.

Wrap up foliage in a warm jacket

Plant jackets are a cost-effective way to protect plants and small trees from the winter weather. Bio Green has five sizes ranging from small to jumbo and each is made from breathable woven micro fleece which is weather, tear and UV resistant and still provides enough light for plants to thrive. The lightweight jackets are easy to use with a zipper and ties, plus the UV resistance carries a reassuring three-year warranty.

Coming in from the cold

Moving container plants from the garden to a greenhouse or inside can be tricky, especially for planters containing trees or larger plants which are packed with soil. Bio Green’s pot lifter has been designed to make the process safer and easier. The strong straps feature two handles, which make moving pots up and down steps super simple.

Don’t forget your roots

Protect plant roots from the cold by using a pot cover. Frost can penetrate container walls and kill the roots, so Bio Green’s plant pot cover, which covers the entire pot and has a draw string around the base of the plant, is fully insulated with a double layer of air cushioning and a 4cm thick insulated base which includes drainage holes.  This sturdy, snug jacket is available in 50cm or 70cm heights.
