After a busy spring and summer season, greenhouses can benefit from a thorough cleanse before the first frosts arrive. If you leave the annual clean-up until the spring, you may be jeopardising the health of your plants.
One of the largest manufacturers of timber garden products in the UK, Forest Garden, shares its top tips to ensure greenhouses are in the best condition for the colder months.
- Keeping a greenhouse clean throughout the season will help to reduce pests. Slug and snail activity will reduce in the colder months, so now is the time to thoroughly check your plants and soil.
- Check window openings for cracks to ensure icy drafts can’t damage delicate plants through the winter. But also check any air vents, as on sunny winter days your greenhouse will benefit from the ventilation as it will help prevent damp and the build-up of mould.
- Sunlight can be in short supply through the winter, so wash your glass windows inside and out with a non-toxic disinfectant to make the most of any bright winter light. Using a non-toxic substance will prevent cleaning water containing harsh chemicals dripping onto your plants.
- Extend your growing season by considering heating options. If the greenhouse has a power supply, a purpose designed greenhouse heater is a good option. This will also increase the range of plants you can grow.
Forest Garden’s greenhouses are made from pressure treated FSC timber and carry a reassuring 15-year guarantee against rot and fungal decay, which means they will stand up to whatever the winter weather throws at them and there is no worry of the wood rotting. The range includes three designs to suit gardens of all sizes.
Victorian Walkaround Greenhouse
A brand new and unique greenhouse for 2019, this functional inside-out design is ideal for small gardens as it allows gardeners to tend to plants without the need to go inside. With space for two grow bag trays on the floor and slatted staging that can be slotted in and out as required, it gives a huge amount of flexibility in a relatively small space. The 4 doors can be configured as suited, depending on access required or position in the garden.
The beautifully constructed Vale Greenhouse is available in three sizes and is ideal for larger spaces or for busy gardeners. The strong and durable design features a thick timber frame which has been kiln dried, pressure treated and smooth planed for a quality finish. It also features toughened safety glass which reduces breakage, and an auto vent to regulate the temperature inside.
Victorian Tall Wall Greenhouse
For small spaces and patios, the Victorian Tall Wall Greenhouse can be placed against a wall or fence to maximise space. One of the two heights of internal staging can be collapsed to make room for taller plants. The safe acrylic glazing and two opening roof vents help to keep the temperature and air flow at an appropriate level.
