Botanical Name: Scilla bifolia

Common Name: Alpine Squill

Family: Asparagaceae

Genus: Scilla

Plant Type:

  • Bulbous perennial

Flowering Period:

  • February to April

Height & Spread:

  • 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) tall
  • Clumps will gradually spread over time

Position:

  • Prefers dappled shade but can tolerate full sun
  • Ideal for woodland gardens, rock gardens, and under deciduous trees

Soil Type:

  • Well-drained, humus-rich soil
  • Prefers moderately fertile, moist but well-drained conditions
  • Can tolerate slightly alkaline to neutral soil but thrives in slightly acidic conditions

Watering:

  • Requires moisture in the growing season but should not be waterlogged
  • Tolerant of drier conditions in summer when dormant

Planting Depth & Spacing:

  • Plant bulbs 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) deep
  • Space bulbs around 5 cm (2 inches) apart

Hardiness:

  • Fully hardy (UK Hardiness Zone: H5)

Propagation:

  • By seed (self-seeds readily)
  • By division of clumps after flowering, once foliage has died back

Pests & Diseases:

  • Generally pest-free
  • Can occasionally be affected by slugs or bulb rot in overly wet conditions

Additional Notes:

  • Naturalises well in grass and woodland settings
  • Attracts pollinators such as early bees
