NEW-LOOK BLENHEIM PALACE BUTTERFLY HOUSE

The Blenheim Palace butterfly house has been given a fresh look for 2024, with the aim of making it more accessible and immersive for visitors, as well as an even better environment than before for its winged inhabitants.

Head Gardener Andy Mills has worked closely with Senior Gardener Chris Horne, who has looked after the Butterfly House for over 10 years, to add a host of new spring flowers including amaryllis and fritillaries, which now sit alongside exotic plants from Africa, Madeira and South America.

The middle pond has been covered over to improve visitor access to the centre of the house, while there is a bigger emphasis on tropical fruits including pineapple, mango and papaya for the butterflies’ diet, to more closely resemble what they would eat in the wild.

Last year, new technology was introduced to help monitor temperature, humidity and butterfly hatch rates in the Butterfly House, which in 2023 welcomed 38 new species of tropical butterflies.

With new residents such as ‘Red Lacewing’, ‘Emerald Peacock’ and the stunning ‘Blue Wave’, the Butterfly House is filled with a myriad of bright and beautiful creatures.

The Ultimate Guide to Bare Root and Root Ball Hedging

0

Whether you want to increase privacy, reduce noise pollution or add style to your garden, hedges are a brilliant addition to any outdoor space. Bare Root and Root Ball hedging are two of the most cost effective and environmentally-friendly ways of growing hedges, saving you time, money and the planet.

With only one month left until the end of the dormant season, and until you need to wait another year to plant your Bare Root or Root Ball hedging, there’s no better time than now to grab your gardening gloves and get planting!

Are you wondering whether Bare Root or Root Ball hedging is best for your garden? You’re not alone as, recent online searches show a stark 200% increase for ‘Bare Root or Root Ball’ over the last three months. Online searches for ‘Bare Root hedging’ and ‘Root Ball hedging’ have also risen by 123% and 200% respectively in the same time.

In light of this, Morris Hankinson, Director of Hopes Grove Nurseries, has explained the key similarities and differences between Bare Root and Root Ball hedging, highlighted their various benefits and given his top tips for planting them.

Bare Root VS Root Ball Hedging – Which one should you choose?

Both Bare Root and Root Ball are great ways to grow hedging, depending on your budget and the space available in your garden. As you begin your hedging journey, you might be wondering how to tell the difference between Bare Root and Root Ball hedging, and which type you should go for.

What is Bare Root Hedging?

Characterised by a strong stem and robust root system, Bare Root hedging is grown in a field and is delivered without any soil or compost around the roots.

During the winter, a significant number of hedge plants, such as white snowberry, hornbeam, common dogwood, common buckthorn and hazel amongst many others go dormant. Their leaves often fall off, leaving behind a strong stem and healthy root system that is hunkering down over the winter, ready in spring and summer time to work hard and grow.

Whilst dormant, it’s easy to lift these beautiful plants from fields. Once lifted, the soil is shaken off to prepare the bare roots before delivering them. You can order Bare Root hedges months in advance, but they can only be delivered during the dormant season from November to April.

What is Root Ball Hedging?

Root Ball hedges tend to be larger and older hedge plants, grown outside at extra wide spacings for several years. A specialist Root Balling machine is then used to cut a ball of earth around the root system.

Like Bare Root hedging, Root Ball hedging is grown, lifted and delivered during October to April when the hedge plants are dormant. Popular types of Root Ball hedging plants include:

  • Common Box Hedging
  • Cherry Laurel Hedging
  • Beech Hedging
  • Portuguese Laurel Hedging
  • Green Privet Hedging
  • Thuja Plicata Hedging
  • English and Irish Yew Hedging

What are the benefits of Bare Root Hedging?

  • The seeds or cuttings are planted directly in the soil of the fields – no heat, glasshouses or compost is needed.
  • The plants have a free root run in the soil so they don’t need watering every day in the summer like trees grown in a pot. Just occasionally if the weather is very hot and dry.
  • No plastic pots or peat compost are required.
  • When the plants are dug up for sale during winter dormancy, all the soil is shaken off in the field. This leaves a much lighter plant that is cheaper and easier to transport. Better for the environment.
  • Because of the low-cost production method, bare root plants are much cheaper to buy. Expect to pay less than half the cost of the same size plant in a pot.

What are the benefits of Root Ball Hedging?

  • With root ball hedges, you can get larger, bushier hedging plants at great value, which can be planted right away for full and impressive hedges.
  • Root Ball hedging results in bigger plants as they’re grown with wider spacing between each plant.
  • As the plants are larger, the density of your hedge increases in very little time.
  • Larger plants struggle to survive being shipped Bare Root, so this is a clever way to protect the roots until the hedge can be transplanted.
  • As Root Ball hedging is more mature than Bare Root hedging, it has an immediate impact once planted in your garden such as improving privacy and reducing noise.

Top tips for planting Bare Root Hedging

  • DO aim to plant earlier in the season rather than later. Autumn (November/December) is best, that way your new plants have several months to settle and make new roots before they start growing again in Spring. Also, the soil is still comparatively warm, this encourages the new roots to grow far more quickly.
  • DO add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when you plant. It is available with a pack of gel that you mix with the granules (a bit like wallpaper paste) and dip the roots in when you plant. This is a great way of getting the maximum potential from your plants.
  • DO add a mulch after planting. This is a layer of organic matter such as well rotted garden compost, coir or wood chips placed around the plants in a layer 5-10cm deep. When the warmer days of Spring arrive, it will conserve moisture around the young roots, and cut down on any weeding needed.
  • If you are planting a new hedge, DO order an extra 5% or so of your plants. One or two failures are almost inevitable but if you have some spares planted temporarily in the corner of a veg patch or border, you can easily fill in any gaps that might appear later.
  • Do check your new trees/shrubs periodically over the Winter, strong winds can dislodge young plants before they get a ‘foothold’, they can then sway in the wind (wind rock) causing a hole to develop around the stem that can fill with water and kill the plant. Simply use the heel of your foot to firm any wobbly plants when you spot them.
  • DON’T plant bare root evergreens if you have a windy/exposed garden or planting site. Evergreen plants and shrubs such as Laurel and Box are never completely dormant and can lose moisture without a little shelter – they can dry out and die long before spring. Invest a little more in some potted plants with a complete root system, they will fare much better.
  • DON’T choose the tallest plants unless you are able to provide support by staking them. Sometimes there is much to be said for planting smaller and cheaper plants that will need less work and less watering the following season – and they always catch up in size!

Top tips for planting Root Ball Hedging

  • DO try to get the site ready before your plants are delivered and remove all perennial weeds from the planting area as this way, you will be able to plant more easily and quickly especially if the weather is bad after delivery. Planting quickly after delivery is a certain insurance against your hedging plants deteriorating and will without doubt give the best results.
  • If possible DO try and avoid planting if the ground is frozen, or immediately after very heavy rain as the soil can compact easily when very wet which will then make it difficult for the roots to establish. If it is very windy do protect the roots of your plants leaving them exposed to the wind for the shortest possible time.
  • DO Unpack your root ball plants and aim to plant them as quickly as possible after delivery (especially later in the season – March and April). If you are not planting immediately they can be stored in a protected place away from drying winds and kept well-watered for a few days, this can be in a sheltered spot outside or in an unheated shed or garage (but not a greenhouse)
  • Root ball plants will usually need a deeper and wider trench than other types of hedging as they can have substantial root systems. DO make sure the sides and bottom of the trench have been loosened with a fork to allow drainage and remove any compaction and give the newly emerging roots a foothold.
  • DO mulch new hedges as it can improve the success rate and vastly improve growth in the first year or two, especially on lighter soils that don’t retain moisture. Mulching is still a great idea on heavier soils that can dry out and crack on the surface in dry spells for most plants except for Box and Yew where too much moisture can be trapped making these species more susceptible to root diseases.
  • Root ball hedging plants DON’T need pruning after planting except for removing the occasional damaged or wayward stem.
  • DON’T forget to water your new trees and shrubs in spring when they start to grow – easily forgotten when it’s been months since they were planted – but so important. As the new leaves emerge in Spring, a dry spell can be fatal, aim to give them a good soak once a week for the first season at least.

MM60 Grass Seed: A Grassroots Success Story

0

In the realm of football, the condition of the playing surface holds immense significance, influencing the game’s outcome and the overall experience for players and spectators alike. While elite stadiums often boast immaculate pitches, grassroots clubs frequently grapple with attaining comparable excellence due to financial limitations and resource constraints. However, Charlestown Football Club, a youth football institution nestled in St Austell, Cornwall, has defied this norm. Leveraging the leading MM60 grass seed, their pitches have undergone a remarkable transformation, setting a new benchmark for grassroots football.

Established in 1972, Charlestown Football Club serves as a bustling community hub, nurturing over 300 registered players aged between 5 and 16. The club prides itself on providing a nurturing environment for both boys and girls to cultivate their passion for football. From hosting annual summer tournaments drawing teams from across Cornwall to operating the Mini Soccer Centre at St Mewan Park since 2006, Charlestown FC is dedicated to nurturing grassroots football talent.

The introduction of MM60 grass seed, renowned for its exceptional quality and performance in professional stadiums, marked a pivotal moment for Charlestown FC’s pitches. David Bevan from Agrovista Amenity, a distributor of MM grass seed, facilitated the integration of this game-changing solution. MM60, featuring a 100% Ryegrass formula renowned for high disease resistance, rapid germination, and superior aesthetics, has elevated the quality of Charlestown FC’s pitches. Enhanced by Headstart® GOLD treatment, this grass seed ensures swift germination and robust establishment, even under challenging conditions.

David’s involvement with Charlestown FC commenced when his son joined the club, eventually leading him to become a coach. Recognising an opportunity to contribute his expertise, David played a pivotal role in advising the club on pitch maintenance and renovation. Through his guidance, the adoption of MM60 for the club’s pitches underscored the importance of investing in top-quality resources, irrespective of the level of play.

“I worked on the theory that just because it is a youth football club, why shouldn’t they use the best grass seed there is, and that is why I went with MM60,” said David. “Personally, I think it is the best winter sports mixture you can get. Because of the huge amount of play the pitches receive, getting sward density consistent over all of them was primarily the main reason for going with MM60. It is really hard-wearing, fast germinating, and I know it is quick to establish.”

As Charlestown FC’s Chairman, James Hutchings witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of MM60 grass seed on the club’s pitches. Under David’s guidance, the club embarked on a comprehensive renovation project, reaping the rewards of their investment in superior grass seed.

James highlighted the invaluable role David and Agrovista Amenity played in maximising the club’s grant funding.

By utilising MM60 grass seed, Charlestown FC has established a new standard for pitch quality and performance at grassroots level. As other clubs aspire to emulate their success, Charlestown FC underscores that with passion, dedication, and the right resources, every football pitch can be one to be proud of.

5 Ways to Create a Hedgehog-Friendly Garden

As urban landscapes encroach upon their natural habitats, hedgehogs increasingly face challenges in accessing food and shelter. However, gardeners can play a crucial role in supporting these beloved creatures by implementing hedgehog-friendly practices. Here are five simple steps to transform your garden into a haven for hedgehogs:

1. Hedgehog Highway:
Create a passage for hedgehogs to roam freely between gardens by installing a hedgehog highway. Simply cut a small hole in your fence to allow easy access. Remember to seek permission from neighbours if sharing a fence.

2. Leave Food Out:
Help hedgehogs find sustenance by leaving out suitable food and water, such as specialised hedgehog food or wet meat-based cat or dog food. Avoid milk, which can be harmful to hedgehogs.

3. Create a Wild Space:
Incorporate wild areas into your garden design to provide hedgehogs with natural foraging and shelter opportunities. Allow grass to grow longer, let plants grow naturally, and avoid using pesticides or herbicides.

4. Build a Hedgehog Home:
Offer hedgehogs a safe haven by building or buying a hedgehog house. Position it in a quiet, sheltered spot filled with dry leaves or straw, ensuring the entrance is predator-proof but accessible to hedgehogs.

5. Keep Them Safe:
Be mindful of potential hazards in your garden, such as uncovered drains, steep ponds, and leaf piles. Check for hedgehogs before using garden equipment like strimmers and lawnmowers. Keep dogs away from hedgehog areas, and consider leaving food in a secluded spot.

Lisa Melvin, Head of Marketing at Pet Range, emphasizes the importance of small actions in supporting hedgehog populations:

“When it comes to helping hedgehogs thrive in our gardens, even the smallest actions can make a big difference. Something as simple as leaving a corner of your garden untouched and letting it run a bit wild can be beneficial, giving the animals not just somewhere to shelter, but a good environment for their prey, allowing them to stick to their natural diet.

“That being said, there are plenty of ways for us humans to supplement hedgehog’s diets. Food made specifically for hedgehogs gives them all the nutrients they need to thrive, but leftover meat-based cat or dog food can provide them with the sustenance they need too.”

By implementing these hedgehog-friendly practices, gardeners can contribute to the conservation of these iconic creatures and create a vibrant ecosystem in their own backyard.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION WITH QUALITY TOPSOIL

0

Early spring is an excellent time to lay topsoil for both your lawn and garden. With the soil thawed and temperatures gradually warming, conditions become favourable for laying the foundations for a top-quality lawn. When creating a thriving and beautiful garden, the importance of quality topsoil cannot be overstated. A nutrient-rich, well-balanced topsoil forms the foundation for healthy plant growth, providing essential elements and minerals to develop a healthy lawn, grow vegetables, or create a stunning flower bed.

At George Davies Turf, we deliver fresh quality turf to thousands of gardens every year, and it’s clear the key to their success lies not just in your turf – which is often the finishing touch – but also in your soil preparation.

So, let’s dive into the world of topsoil and explore what makes the right mix so vital for gardening and landscaping success.

Start with a soil test

Good preparation starts with a soil test. This will help you understand the pH of your soil, building a picture of the nutrients that may be lacking.

After you figure out what your soil needs, you can improve it by adding a soil enhancer. By integrating organic materials into your garden, you can enhance soil composition, fostering optimal structure and facilitating robust root development. This approach nurtures a conducive environment for plant growth, ensuring flourishing and resilient vegetation throughout your garden.

Dig or rotovate your soil

The next step is to dig or rotovate your soil. This will help loosen it, making it easier for roots to spread and giving your plants the best chance to thrive. For smaller gardens, a spade is sufficient for this task. However, larger gardens or lawns may require the use of a rotavator for efficient soil preparation.

Rake over the surface

Once you have dug or rotovated your soil, rake over the surface to create a smooth finish. This will also help remove any stones or large clumps of dirt that could impact on plant growth.

Finding the right mix

There are many types of topsoil online, so finding the right one for your garden may be overwhelming. Remember, each garden is different. Soil composition plays a significant role in determining a particular topsoil’s suitability for different plants and landscaping projects. Let’s take a closer look at different topsoil types and understand their characteristics:

Chalky: Chalky soil is alkaline and often shallow, consisting of limestone or chalk fragments. While it drains well, there may be better solutions for plants that prefer acidic conditions.

Clay: Clay soil is composed of fine particles and has excellent water retention capabilities. However, you may want to tread carefully, as it can become compacted and poorly drained, leading to root health issues.

Peaty: This soil is rich in organic matter and retains moisture effectively. It’s perfect for acid-loving plants but may require drainage improvements for some species.

Loamy: A loamy soil often delivers a balanced blend of sand, silt, and clay, offering excellent drainage and moisture retention. In very dry conditions, this type of soil often hardens and forms surface cracks.

Sandy: Sandy soil has larger particles and drains quickly, making it suitable for drought-tolerant plants. However, it may lack the necessary nutrients for certain plant species.

Silty: Silty soil consists of fine particles, offering good drainage and fertility. It can become compacted if it is not maintained correctly.

Different types of soil have specific needs, so it’s important to think about them when planning a garden or landscaping project. Ultimately, you’ll create the perfect foundation for a beautiful garden with the right combination of nutrients, air circulation and water retention.

What’s in Our Topsoil, and Why Is It So Versatile?

At George Davies Turf, we take great pride in our topsoil mix, which is carefully formulated to deliver versatility and provides essential nutrients to nourish plants at their roots, such as growing fruit and vegetables, filling beds and borders and providing the perfect foundation for lawns.

We use a unique blend (85% sand and up to 15% silt & clay) to create the perfect consistency – neither too fine nor too coarse. Our topsoil mix provides excellent drainage, improved aeration, and water-retention properties, and meets BS3882:2015 standards, ensuring its quality and consistency.

Optimal Drainage: The sandy component ensures that excess water can quickly drain away, preventing waterlogged soil, which can harm plant roots.

Moisture Retention: The silt and clay content help the soil retain moisture, providing a steady supply of water to plants even during dry spells.

Nutrient-Rich: The mix contains essential nutrients that support plant growth and development, reducing the need for additional fertilisers.

Versatility: The balanced mix makes it suitable for various gardening projects, including laying turf, establishing flower beds, and nurturing shrubs and trees.
