CORE SERVICES

Grass cutting

Nothing sets off a garden better than a beautiful lawn! We usually cut lawns on either a weekly or fortnightly basis. Every three weeks or monthly will lead to problems of too much grass to cut low and will not save any money in the long term as the increased difficulty means increased costs.

Hedge cutting

Hedge aren't just useful for privacy and as a wind break, they also look great when they are maintained properly. At Local Gardener Hertfordshire we like to keep hedges nice and tight to encourage the hedge to fill in any gaps and give an even full appearance

border care

Well kept borders are the icing on the cake for gardens. Plant knowledge is essential to keep your borders looking their best. Perennials cut down at the right time or seedlings of perennials being identified as such and not hoed out as weeds can be the difference between a great looking border and an average one

A FAMILY'S JOURNEY IN HORTICULTURE

G.F.TUTTLE 1947

The gardening journey in our family began with my grandfather, R.F. Tuttle, who, after World War II, returned to his roots in the world of gardening. In 1947, he took a position as a gardener on a local estate, continuing his passion for cultivating and caring for plants. This connection to nature and the land was passed down to me, as I embarked on my own gardening path. At just 17 years old, I started my first job with the local Council during the summer holidays in the late 1970s. It was a deep dive into the profession, learning the ropes of gardening on a larger scale. This early experience set the foundation for my future, and after several years working with different local landscape companies, I decided to venture out on my own. In 1991, I founded my own gardening business, driven by a desire to bring my unique vision to the field. Over time, the business grew, and I started employing a small team, reaching a point where we had four to five full-time staff members. For the next decade, we continued to expand and build a reputation for quality work. In 2016, the landscape of the industry began to change. The Housing Association market started to consolidate contracts into large, multi-million-pound deals, which led to our primary contracts being taken over by multinational companies. This shift required us to make difficult decisions, including laying off employees. Thankfully, we still had a strong portfolio of large private jobs that kept the business afloat. By 2020, the pressures of managing a growing company began to fade. We found that we preferred a simpler approach, without the stress of a large workforce. This shift allowed us to return to the roots of what had inspired us all along—gardening itself. Without the burden of staff management, we could focus on what brought us joy and satisfaction—working directly with plants and enjoying the beauty of the natural world. It’s been a journey of growth, change, and rediscovery, but through it all, our love for gardening has remained the constant thread that ties our story together.
