How to Repair Lawn Edges and Bare Patches for a Healthier Lawn

A well-maintained lawn enhances the look of any garden, but over time, edges can become ragged, and bare patches can develop due to heavy foot traffic, pests, or harsh weather. Spring is the perfect time to repair these areas and restore your lawn to its best condition. Here’s how to do it effectively.

Repairing Lawn Edges

Lawn edges can become uneven or damaged, especially along pathways and flower beds. Here’s a step-by-step guide to fixing them:

1. Mark and Cut the New Edge

  • Use a sharp half-moon edging tool or spade to redefine the lawn edge.
  • Cut a clean, curved, or straight line along the damaged section.

2. Remove the Damaged Turf

  • Cut out the damaged section in a neat strip.
  • Lift the sod carefully and shake off excess soil to reuse if possible.

3. Replace or Reposition Turf

  • If the edge has receded, move the lifted turf forward to fill the gap.
  • Alternatively, replace it with fresh turf cut to size.
  • Firm it down with your foot and water well.

4. Maintain the Edge

  • Use a strimmer or edging shears regularly to keep edges crisp.
  • Add a permanent edging solution, such as bricks or metal strips, for longer-term maintenance.

Repairing Bare Patches

Bare patches in the lawn can be caused by wear, pests, or disease. Follow these steps to regrow grass in these areas:

1. Prepare the Area

  • Rake out any dead grass and debris.
  • Loosen the soil with a fork to improve drainage and root growth.

2. Apply Grass Seed or Turf

  • If using seed, scatter evenly over the area at the recommended rate.
  • Lightly rake to cover the seed with soil.
  • If using turf, cut a patch to fit and press it firmly into place.

3. Water and Protect

  • Water regularly to keep the soil moist until new growth appears.
  • Protect the area from foot traffic using temporary netting or stakes.

4. Feed and Maintain

  • Apply a light lawn feed to encourage growth.
  • Once the new grass reaches mowing height, trim lightly to encourage thickening.

By taking the time to repair lawn edges and bare patches, you’ll improve the appearance and health of your lawn, making it a lush, green focal point in your garden. Regular maintenance will help prevent future damage and keep your lawn looking pristine year-round.
