Hedge Maintenance

By Webb Garden Power Expert Adam Woolcott

Well-maintained hedges can transform any garden, providing privacy, structure, and year-round beauty. Adam Woolcott, a garden power expert at Webb, shares his top tips for keeping UK hedges healthy and looking their best.

Trim Your Hedges Now to Avoid Fines for Nesting Bird Disturbance!

With spring arriving, our beautiful and diverse bird population will soon begin nesting. Hedges are one of their favourite locations for building safe and secure homes for their young.

If you’re planning to trim your hedges, it’s essential to do so as soon as possible to avoid disturbing birds while they construct and use their nests. Ideally, hedge trimming should be completed before the end March and then paused until at least August to protect these vulnerable creatures.

Disturbing or damaging an active bird’s nest isn’t just harmful to wildlife – it can also result in a hefty fine under wildlife protection laws. By acting now, you’ll help preserve our feathered friends while keeping your garden neat and nature-friendly.

Let’s all do our part to protect birds this nesting season!

Choosing the Right Hedge

Different hedges require different care routines. Here are some common UK hedges:

  • Evergreen Hedges Yew, Laurel, Boxwood – Provide year-round greenery and require regular trimming to maintain shape.
  • Deciduous Hedges Beech, Hornbeam, Hawthorn – Lose leaves in winter but create a striking seasonal look.
  • Flowering Hedges Forsythia, Rosa Rugosa – Add colour and attract pollinators but need careful pruning to encourage blooms.

Hedge Maintenance

  1. Best Time to Cut – Most hedges benefit from trimming now until the end of March then start cutting from August, but check species-specific needs. Avoid nesting season to protect wildlife.
  2. Sharp Tools Matter – Use Cordless battery, electric corded or petrol-powered hedge trimmers for a clean cut
  3. Feed and Water – Hedges, especially young ones, need regular watering and a balanced fertiliser in spring for strong growth.
  4. Check for Pests and Diseases – Watch for common problems like box blight or aphids and treat them early to prevent damage.

With the right care and tools, your hedge will remain a stunning feature in your garden all year round.
