Give wildlife a helping hand this World Environment Day

Climate anxiety is a phenomenon many people across the country, and indeed the world, are experiencing, with many of us worried about the impact of climate change on the environment. Here in the UK, our wildlife continues to decline drastically, with species including hedgehogs, bees, butterflies and many varieties of birds all facing a catastrophic crash in numbers over recent years. So, it’s safe to say that our wildlife needs a helping hand.

But don’t panic! There’s power in numbers, and there are many small steps we can take together, that will help make a huge difference to our environment.

With World Environment Day around the corner (5th June 2022), wildlife specialist, Vivara, share some top tips to help you make a difference, starting in your very own back garden, patio or balcony.

Create a wildlife friendly garden

One of the easiest things we can do to make a positive impact on the environment is to increase the abundance of wildlife here on our doorstep, and the best place to start is from the ground up. Plants don’t just look pretty! Adding plants with purpose to your outdoor space is an easy way of making your garden, patio or even balcony look beautiful while being beneficial to bees, butterflies and insects. There are endless varieties of nutritious plants to choose, from pollen-rich perennials and butterfly-magnet buddlejas to fruit trees that both you and  wildlife will enjoy.

If you’re not sure where to start, try a Vivara wildlife border. With four bundles available; the Butterfly Garden; the Bee Friendly Garden; the Bee Rose Garden; and the Best-Ever Bird Garden, each pack provides everything nature enthusiasts need to create a haven for wildlife.

Designed to fill a one metre by three metre space, the garden kits contain a handpicked array of plants which are beneficial and nutritional to wildlife, as well as a selection of feeders and shelters to help promote biodiversity on your doorstep.

Build a bird restaurant

With habitat loss and food shortages causing serious issues for many species, the birds in your back garden will be grateful if you can provide them with a regular meal. Feeding the birds can be as big or as small a project as you would like it to be, but begin by identifying the type of birds in your area and what type of feeder they prefer.

Agile birds such as the Blue Tit, Great Tit, Sparrow or Woodpecker, prefer to cling to feeders, so opt for a hanging feeder or wall-mounted feeder to feed them. Ground feeding birds, like Blackbirds, Robins and Wrens, prefer to rummage on flat areas so would prefer a ground feeding table.

Fill your chosen feeder with a high-quality bird food, such as High-Energy No Mess seed mix, Quality Fat Balls, or Peanut Cakes, to help keep birds healthy whilst keepinghunger at bay! Don’t forget that all wildlife needs watertoo, so make sure there is a supply of fresh water in your garden to ensure they have plenty to drink and clean themselves with.

Make a home for hedgehogs

Our gardens are important habitats for local wildlife, but with many UK gardens now perfectly clipped and landscaped, it can be difficult for endangered species such as hedgehogs to find a safe space to rest and rear their young. A hedgehog house is a great investment for wildlife in your area, providing refuge during the long winter months for hibernation and a quiet corner to breed during the summer.

Vivara’s Hedgehog Baskets are available in a variety of sizes and shapes to suit your space, and importantly, each hedgehog house is lined with plastic to prevent the prickly creatures from getting their spikes caught on the inside.

Simply line your hedgehog house with loose leaves and some Hedgehog Bedding to make a cosy, warm habitat for them. Cover the basket with a thick layer of leaves, branches and other natural material, making sure that the opening is left clear, and place it somewhere quiet in your garden. Just make sure it’s not facing north or north-east to protect them from chilly winds!

Vivara has also launched their NEW premium hedgehog biscuits, created by wildlife experts. This specially created food gives hedgehogs the nutrition and calories they need to thrive ahead of breeding season and during the colder months when natural food is scarce. This food is packed with protein and minerals, which can be fed to hedgehogs all year round.

Connect with nature

Once you have taken action and helped create a haven for wildlife in your own back garden, don’t forget to look after yourself, as well. Taking time to stop and reconnect with nature can help ease the climate anxiety you may experience and boost your wellbeing.

The simple buzz of a bumble bee or regular visits from a friendly robin enjoying your bird food will remind you that there is beauty everywhere and help you to refocus your energy on the positive, despite the doom and gloom of the news!

If you’re struggling to find space to reconnect with nature, tune in to one of Vivara’s 24/7 live webcams, which allows you to check in on a range of bird species from the comfort of your own home, including owls, peregrine falcon’s, storks, garden birds and many more.
