Do daffodils kill other flowers in the same vase?

Daffodils look great in a display with other flowers but daffodils kill other flowers in the same vase?

Yes, daffodils do make other flowers wilt in the same vase. It’s because the sap released from the stems contains Narciclasine that can be harmful to other cut flowers. The main victims are tulips but roses can also suffer because the sugars in daffodil mucilage can increase bacteria that block water uptake. Of course roses are not in bloom at the same time as daffodils so in normal garden picked displays this is not a problem.

Should you want a mixed display then putting the daffodils in a separate vase for at least eight hours normally seals the stems and the daffodils can then be put safely in with other cut flowers.
