Shrubs
Shrubs are woody plants that typically have multiple stems and a bushy appearance, growing to a smaller size than trees but larger than herbaceous plants. They are versatile and valuable in gardens for their ability to provide structure, texture, and year-round interest. Shrubs can be deciduous or evergreen, with some flowering in spring or summer, while others offer colorful foliage or striking bark in the colder months.
Common examples of shrubs include hydrangeas, boxwoods, lilacs, and roses. Some shrubs are prized for their fragrant flowers, such as jasmine and lavenders, while others, like holly and laurel, are appreciated for their evergreen foliage, offering privacy and shelter throughout the year.
Shrubs can be used in a variety of ways, including as hedges, borders, or specimen plants. They also make great foundation plantings, helping to frame buildings or soften architectural lines. Their ability to thrive in different soil types and light conditions makes them adaptable to a wide range of garden designs, from formal landscapes to natural, cottage-style gardens. With their low maintenance and enduring beauty, shrubs are an essential element in creating dynamic and sustainable garden spaces.
