Neutral Soil
Neutral soil has a balanced pH level, typically ranging from 6.5 to 7.5, making it neither acidic nor alkaline. This type of soil is ideal for most plants because it provides an optimal environment for nutrient availability. In neutral soil, essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are readily accessible to plants, promoting healthy growth and development.
Neutral soil is versatile and supports a wide variety of plants, including vegetables, flowers, and shrubs. It tends to have a good balance of sand, silt, and clay, offering both excellent drainage and the ability to retain sufficient moisture. Because of its balanced pH, neutral soil helps to maintain stable microbial activity, which further enhances nutrient cycling and soil health.
Gardeners with neutral soil typically face fewer challenges with pH adjustments, making it easier to cultivate a diverse range of plants without needing to amend the soil significantly. Its fertility, ease of cultivation, and compatibility with a wide range of plants make neutral soil a highly desirable growing medium.
The gardening journey in our family began with my grandfather, R.F. Tuttle, who, after World War II, returned to his roots in the world of gardening. In 1947, he took a position as a gardener on a local estate, continuing his passion for cultivating and caring for plants. This connection to nature and the land was passed down to me, as I embarked on my own gardening path. At just 17 years old, I started my first job with the local Council during the summer holidays in the late 1970s. It’s been a journey of growth, change, and rediscovery, but through it all, our love for gardening has remained the constant thread that ties our story together
