May is a vibrant month in the garden as plants grow rapidly, flowers bloom, and warmer weather becomes more consistent. It’s an exciting time to plant, nurture, and enjoy the results of earlier efforts.
General maintenance includes staying on top of weeding as growth accelerates. Water regularly, especially in dry spells, focusing on new plants and containers. Check supports for climbing plants and replace or secure stakes as needed. Keep an eye out for pests like slugs and snails, and take appropriate measures to protect vulnerable plants.
In ornamental gardening, plant out summer bedding plants, dahlias, and tender perennials once the risk of frost has passed. Deadhead spring flowers and prune shrubs that have finished flowering, such as forsythia. Continue staking tall perennials and tie in climbing plants like sweet peas. Harden off young plants that have been grown indoors before planting them out. Sow biennials such as foxgloves and wallflowers for flowering next year.
For fruit and vegetable gardening, sow a wide range of crops outdoors, including beans, sweetcorn, and courgettes. Plant out tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers in greenhouses or warm spots outdoors. Earth up potatoes as they grow to protect tubers from sunlight. Thin out earlier sowings of carrots and parsnips, and keep strawberries well-watered, mulching around the plants to retain moisture and deter weeds. Protect fruit trees and bushes from late frosts using fleece if needed.
Lawn care in May involves regular mowing to keep grass neat and healthy, adjusting the mower height to suit growing conditions. Feed lawns with a high-nitrogen fertilizer to promote lush growth and continue patching bare areas with seed or turf. If moss or weeds persist, apply appropriate treatments.
Wildlife and sustainability tasks include planting nectar-rich flowers like salvias and marigolds to attract bees and butterflies. Avoid tidying up wild corners of the garden to provide shelter for insects and small mammals. Keep bird feeders stocked and ensure fresh water is available. Check ponds for algae and remove excess to maintain a healthy environment for aquatic wildlife.
May is a joyful month when the garden bursts into life. It’s the perfect time to plant, enjoy the outdoors, and appreciate the beauty of the season.
