NATIONAL VEGETABLE COMPETITION DATES REVEALED FOR SEPTEMBER

Date:

THIS YEAR has seen most horticultural shows cancelled due to the coronavirus lockdown, but as restrictions begin to lift vegetable growers around the country still have the chance to compete on a national level thanks to leading plant nutrient and growing medium brand CANNA UK, and event partner Medwyns of Anglesey.

The Grow Show: On Tour will run in three different areas across the UK, giving growers the chance to weigh in or exhibit their show displays as part of a nationwide competition.

Holly Bolus, marketing manager at CANNA, said: “Under normal circumstances, the CANNA UK National Giant Vegetable Competition would see gigantic grows go head to head as part of the Malvern Autumn Show, but like most events throughout the year this has been cancelled.

“Growers up and down the country will have been working towards the usual weighing events throughout the harvest season, so we wanted to make sure they still have the chance to showcase their hard work despite all the usual shows being cancelled. So, we have decided to make sure that growers still have the opportunity to compete by bringing our own event on tour.

“As we all know, these events often see new world records being set and we hope that this year will be no different. We will have and officiant on site during all events to officially verify any new records. To those entering, please make sure you advise during the entry process if you feel you are close to a record so we can make sure to include your entry in validation processes.”

The Grow Show: On Tour will run in three different areas, holding events in Mansfield, East Midlands (Saturday 26 September) and Piddington, Oxford (Sunday 27 September) before culminating in Anglesey, Wales at the home of champion grower Medwyn Williams (Monday 28 September).

Entrants will only be allowed to compete at one of the three event locations, but there is no maximum number of categories an entrant can take part in. The categories available to enter are heaviest vegetables, longest vegetables and show vegetables.

Holly continued: “The usual show vegetable categories have been included, but we’ve also incorporated a junior and family fun category for those who may have turned to growing projects throughout lockdown. Entries will be encouraged for sunflowers, garden on a plate and vegetable animals – and we hope to find some of the champion growers of the future within this category.”

The show organisers will be ensuring that all events adhere to government COVID-19 safety guidelines and will be keeping procedures updated based on any further developments in the event locations.

Speaking about the safety measures in place, Holly said: “While it’s really important to us that growers still have the chance to compete in growing competitions this year, it’s of vital importance that we keep everyone safe as well. This means that hand sanitisers will be available, masks will be required, and time slots must be booked for entrants to help with attendance control and social distancing. Any updates in procedure will be clearly communicated to entrants where relevant.”
