in Dobbies’ latest podcast
With RHS Chelsea Flower Show still fresh in the minds of gardening fans, Dobbies Garden Centres has released its latest podcast which goes behind-the-scenes at this year’s show.
In the latest episode, podcast host and gardening writer Louise Midgley is joined by Dobbies’ Horticulture Director, Marcus Eyles, and Dobbies’ Ambassador, Henry Agg, as they discuss their favourite of the 27 gardens at the show, identifying key horticulture trends, and diving into the Dobbies’ garden, which was awarded a 5 star accolade, with celebrities including Dame Judy Dench and Alexandra Burke paying a visit.
For the first time in the show’s 108 year history, the 2021 RHS Chelsea Flower Show was hosted in September rather than May. For Dobbies’ Ambassador, Henry Agg, this was his first visit to the show and he was particularly impressed with the Dobbies’ stand. He said: “When I first stepped into the garden itself, you could hear all the buzzing, there were bees smothering the Sedum, it was truly a pollinators’ haven.”
Created with sustainability in mind, the Dobbies’ stand featured an impactful living wall, an area dedicated to promoting the benefits of pollinators and sustainable gardening practices, as well as a grow-your-own area. There was also a range of plants including Delphinium, Echinacea, Heuchera and Rudbeckia, as well as houseplants including Monstera, Nephrolepsis, Calathea and Adiantum.
During the podcast, Marcus Eyles shares his top tips on ensuring sustainability in your garden over this autumn period. He suggests using peat-free compost, with Dobbies now offering a whole range of peat-free products, including new ranges for mature plants, potting on and ericaceous plants. Marcus also encourages gardeners to take up home composting and using garden trimmings and debris to create habitat areas for local wildlife to take shelter over the harsh winter months.
