Acid soilBrunnera 'Jack Frost'

Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’

Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ is quite a tough plant. It’s fully hardy and does best in shade or dappled shade. The soil should ideally be fairly rich with plenty of humus.

The tiny blue flowers come out in April and May. For tropical gardens it is grown mainly for its silvery heart shaped foliage and is particularly useful for shady underplanting.

brunnera jack frost

Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ tends to spread and eventually form large clumps. Every couple of years it’s worth digging up the plant and dividing it. This should be done in the autumn.

Although it likes moist conditions it will still do OK in dry conditions once it has got going. It is a perennial and it will die back in the winter and lose its leaves. New leaves appear in the spring.

Should you start getting plain green leaves then these should be cut right back to the base.

Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ will reach a height of about 40cm with a similar spread.
