IT’S BACK! Two years after an epic hailstorm wiped out the entire crop, specialist mail order fruit and vegetable company, D. T. Brown, has officially announced the return of The Kelsae Onion. Thanks to the skill and dedication of their expert breeders and following a painstaking reselection process, the company have been able to bulk up their mother stock and even have enough seed leftover to offer a small amount of plants for spring 2018.
The company now plans to use the mother stock to produce a commercial crop in four secret locations in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Holland and Italy and hopes to be able to re-introduce the seed in 2020 if the programme goes well.
D.T. Brown’s General Manager Tim Jeffries says “I’m delighted that The Kelsae is back. I’ll never forget the day I got a call from our Italian growers with news of the storm. Not only have we enough mother stock to lay down a commercial crop, the bonus is that there’s a bit of seed left over to offer as plants for this season too”.
Around show circles, The Kelsae has a legendry reputation that’s second to none. A regular winner at the NVS national championships in the ‘large exhibition’ and ‘1kg to 1.5kg’ onion classes, it’s unusual in also having a delicious, sweet flavour.
Plants of The Kelsae Onion are modular grown in individual cells to minimise root disturbance and are carefully hand graded, packed and will be despatched from mid-April 2018. They are available to buy now, 40 plants cost £11.95.
