Marshalls are exceptionally proud of their buyer Nikki Hargreaves, after raising eyebrows at her local Morton and Hanthorpe Annual Village show, winning first prize for more than five exhibits including vegetables and blackcurrant jelly in the home-grown fruit and vegetable competition.
Nikki set her sights on showcasing her home-grown vegetables, putting them to the test and on the showbench. She stormed the Vegetable category, each variety a Marshalls product, coming 1st in category for her Carrots, Main Crop Potatoes, Salad Potatoes and Bunch of Herbs.
Nikki used Marshalls Rainbow Carrot Mix, Kestrel Potatoes, Purple Majesty Potatoes, Purple Sage, Rosemary, Lemon Balm, Fennel and Curry Plant and scooped the top prize.
Nikki explains; “Vegetable showing was a new experience for me and although it was hard work, it was so much fun. I was amazed the rainbow carrots won over the orange varieties in that class. I also never thought I would be rubbing talcum powder on onions or laying runner beans in a damp towel to get the show ready.
“Both of my potatoes won even though I chose more unusual types to exhibit but they were definitely a talking point and added a modern edge to this traditional event.”
Alongside the 1st prizes, Nikki took 2nd for her Marshalls Red Fen Onions and 3rd for her Runner Beans Stardust. Nikki also won 1st for her Piccalilli which contained onions and runner beans purchased from Marshalls. Nikki adds;
“My best 1st prize was in the Jelly class. The competition was fierce and I was ecstatic to win. My children picked the blackcurrants in the allotment, it was a great way to spend some quality family time and it is one of the greatest achievements of my life so far.”
We want to give Nikki a big congratulations on her resounding success and we look forward to seeing what she can do next year.
