“ Making the most of it ” is to be the big trend of 2018, predicts bespoke shed manufacturer The Posh Shed Company.
It comes following a great year for the company, with shed sales up 21% on 2016. 2017 also saw a staggering 300% increase in sales of its Chelsea shed, which offers compact and adaptable storage. It is this which sparked the prediction, as managing director, Richard Frost, explains: “Garden space is at a premium for most homeowners. But that shouldn’t mean giving up on a stylish yet practical garden. The Chelsea is unique for a shed as it features built-in shelving on the outside so that capacity is maximised without internal space being compromised. We’ve noticed average garden sizes getting smaller, but the need for storage has not changed, so gardeners need to be making the most of the space that they’ve got!”
By producing bespoke creations, The Posh Shed Company is able to deliver exactly what its customers need and is, therefore, in the unique and fortunate position to be able to comment on changing attitudes and behaviours, whilst delivering the perfect solution.
Posh Shed customers are also maximising the space available in their gardens by selecting multi-use sheds. Richard continues: “This is certainly something we’ve seen an increase in. A shed isn’t just a place for storing tools anymore! The she-shed has been a big trend in the past few years and we’re now seeing people using sheds to serve a more practical functional space. We’ve had some fantastic projects where we’ve created half greenhouse/half shed – the greenshed if you will – to help people maximise their available space”.
Part of embracing the smaller garden involves being clever with design to make even the smallest of spaces serve a purpose. This also led to the creation of The Posh Shed Company’s allotment store, with a plantable roof on top of a storage cupboard, perfect for those lacking in space for greenery. Further to this, and to meet the demand of those who do not have garden space in abundance, The Posh Shed Company will this year be launching compact back door stores, ideal for accessible storage of outdoor necessities without the need for a full shed.
The use of the garden for entertaining and the continued growth of alfresco is also set to be a big market for The Posh Shed Company in 2018. Perhaps a combination of embracing outdoor living, whilst also factoring in the challenges of the traditional great outdoors, is the popularity of verandas which the company noticed more customers asking for in 2017, and expects it to continue in 2018.
On the colour palette, popular choices this year were muted greys and greens which was a shift from the 2016 when it was pastels and more natural shades. However, there was also more demand for statement sheds with some customers picking bold and bright creations. The Posh Shed Company, by handcrafting each creation to the individual customers’ exact specification, is able to paint the shed in any colour – no matter how unusual!
Looking to the year ahead, Richard continued: “Aside from embracing small gardens and maximising space, whilst maintaining style and aesthetics, our final prediction is for the growth in the solar market in the garden – not just for ornamental lighting but also practical solutions. We now offer solar hubs with our sheds to grant gardeners the ability to charge their phone or even power a light so they can stay outdoors longer!”
