I just got a surprising letter from my accountant. No, it wasn’t the usual surprise, i.e. the size of his invoice, no, he was suggesting that I need to think about becoming a sole trader. And this after decades of him singing the praises of being a limited company. What about the way being limited protected my private belongings should I go bankrupt? The prestige of being limited? The tax breaks? What’s happened? Apparently the Chancellor has seen fit to alter the tax arrangements on limited companies to the point where there is small advantage in being limited, unless you’re earning over £100,000. That’s your pay not your turnover. If you earn over £100k you are better off under the new arrangements (how surprising). Yet another attack on small self employed gardeners and a helping hand to the bigger businesses. Britain will soon be a country of just a few very large shopkeepers.
